Privacy policy
Last changed 21 October 2026.
Spoonhouse is an app for sharing lists, chores, a calendar and a chat with the people you live with. This page says what we keep, why, where it lives, who can see it, and how to make it go away. If anything here is unclear, email hello@spoonhouse.app and a person will answer.
The short version
- We keep what you put in the app, so your household can share it. That is all it is for.
- It is stored in Sydney, Australia.
- Your chat is end to end encrypted. We cannot read it.
- No ads. We never sell your data, and we do not track you across other apps or sites.
- You can delete your account from Settings in the app, or by email.
Who we are
Spoonhouse is made by a small team in Australia. In this policy, "we" and "us" means the people who make Spoonhouse, and "your household" means the people you share it with. You can reach us at hello@spoonhouse.app.
What we keep, and why
Your account
- Your name, as you typed it, so your household knows who did what.
- Your passkeys. We keep the public half and a label (such as the passkey app it lives in). The private half never leaves your phone or passkey app, and there is no password.
- Recovery codes, if you make them. We keep only a scrambled version (a salted hash), so we cannot see the codes themselves.
- Which household you are in, and when you joined.
Your household
- The household's name, its time zone, who is in it, each person's colour, and who looks after it (the owner).
- Invite links. We keep a scrambled version of each link, who made it and when it runs out. A link works once, for 7 days.
What you add
Lists and their items, chores and who did them, calendar events, wish lists and gift plans, boards, plans, pets (with their photos, meds, vet and health notes), and anything else you write into the app. Gift plans are kept so that the person a gift is for can never see them.
Your meds
My meds is private to you by default. Someone else in your household can see a med only if you choose them under "Who can see this", and then only that med and whether it was taken. Health details are sensitive, so we use them for nothing except showing them to you and the people you pick. Med reminders are made on your phone, and we never send med names in notifications.
The chat
Messages, photos, reactions and notes in the chat are encrypted on your phone before they leave it, and only the phones in your household hold the key. We store them, but we cannot read them. To deliver them we still see some facts around them: who sent a message and when, which conversation it is in, whether it is text, a photo or something shared, and which phones have joined the chat (their model and public keys).
Your phones
For each phone you sign in on, we keep a notification address (from Firebase Cloud Messaging), the phone's model and when it last checked in, so we can tell your household's phones about updates. We also keep your notification choices and quiet hours.
The waitlist
If you join the waitlist on this site, we keep your email address and the date you joined, and use it only to tell you once when Spoonhouse is ready. Ask us and we will take it off straight away.
This website
The site sets no cookies. We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies or identify you; it tells us things like how many people visited and which page they came from.
Who can see it
- Your household sees what is shared with the household: lists, chores, the calendar, boards, plans, pets, wish lists and the chat.
- Only you see your meds, unless you share one, and your passkeys and recovery codes.
- Notifications carry a short line such as "Sam added milk to Groceries". Chat notifications only ever say who sent something, never what it says.
- Us. We do not look at your household's things. We would only do so if you ask us to help with a problem, or if the law makes us. We cannot read the chat at all.
- Nobody else, except the services below that run the app for us, and only to do that.
Where it lives, and who helps run it
- Google Firebase stores your data and runs the app's server, in Google's Sydney region (australia-southeast1).
- Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google) delivers notifications to your phone. Notifications may pass through Google's systems outside Australia on the way.
- Google Play delivers the app, and Firebase App Distribution delivers test versions to testers. Google's own privacy policy covers what they keep about installs.
- Cloudflare runs this website's address, its email forwarding and its visit counting.
What we never do
- Show ads, or let anyone else show them.
- Sell or rent your data, or share it for anyone else's marketing.
- Track you across other apps or websites. The app has no analytics or advertising code in it.
- Read your chat. We cannot.
Keeping it safe
You sign in with a passkey, so there is no password to steal. Everything travels encrypted between your phone and the server. The server's rules only let people in a household read that household's things, and the chat is end to end encrypted on top of that.
How long we keep it
- While you have an account, we keep what you put in, so it is there next time.
- When you leave a household, your phones, notification choices, saved messages and chat read state for it are deleted. Shared things you made, like list items, stay with the household.
- When the last person leaves a household, the whole household is deleted, with its photos and invite links.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from Settings in the app at any time, or on the delete your account page, or by emailing hello@spoonhouse.app from the address you want us to reply to. Everything that is yours is deleted: your account, passkeys, recovery codes, meds, phones and choices. Shared lists and other things you made for your household stay with your household, so nobody else loses them. If you ask by email, we will confirm it is really you first and then do it within 30 days.
Your choices
- You can see and change almost everything you have put in, in the app.
- You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, or to correct it, by email.
- If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Children
Spoonhouse is made for adults sharing a home. It is not meant for children under 16 to sign up on their own.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If a change matters, such as keeping something new, we will tell you in the app before it happens.
